Life on The Rock

Over a week ago I wrote Perspective

Uncle Sam & boysI have so appreciated watching Tim shepherd Aunt Dee through these hard days!

She is amazing! – a true pillar of strength
a living example of building a life on the Solid Rock
so when the storm of life hit her,
and she lost her best friend and husband of 71 years,
she was not  – and IS NOT –  shaken.
Mt 7:24-27

Today, Monday, she boarded a plane for Philadelphia and the funeral service.
And that’s an answer to prayer.
Because Saturday she was in the hospital getting a blood transfusion.

But God not only answered her prayer about getting to go to the funeral.

  • Before she left this morning she was able to connect with an international couple she and Uncle Sam had befriended years ago, which lifted her spirits. She was able to share Jesus with them once again.
  • On the way to the airport she shared Jesus with the driver from the funeral home. As she got out of the car she said, “Now Chris, make sure you go to church.”
  • I’m sure there will be stories of how she shared about God on the plane!

We continue to marvel at how God is holding her up, how she depends on Him, gives Him praise, and speaks about Him to anyone and everyone she meets.

As you read this, would you pray for Aunt Dee?
It’s been a long month,
and Tuesday, July 23, 2013 she will bury her love,
her life partner of 71 years.
Thanks for holding her up before the Throne of Grace!

Uncle Sam
2 days shy of 92 years old
Soccer player
Italian connoisseur
Husband of 71 years

He went into ICU a few weeks ago with lung complications.
He got better and went to rehab.
We visited him last week.
He was still the jokester…
just a little slower

Uncle Sam & boys

Had to go back into ICU a few days ago.
Aunt Dee & I talked yesterday
praying for wisdom –
should she go home or stay at the hospital…
praying for healing
“God we know You can ultimately heal Uncle Sam.
We pray that You will heal him,
that he’d be able to skip the rehab and go right home”

And God said yes.

Just not the home we were expecting.
And the reality of eternity
and God’s perspective of what’s real
are just a little clearer today
even through the tears.

The Sisters

I have had the privilege of seeing the influence of godly parenting
and the strength of roots that have grown deep in the soil of God’s Word.

I never met MomMom and PopPop Pernie. But I have met their 4 daughters, one of whom is Tim’s mom. Recently the girls lost their oldest sister. It has truly been a privilege to watch the sisters during this time and see the influence MomMom and PopPop Pernie’s godly legacy had on their girls.

The sisters have mourned, but not without hope.

They grieve the loss of physical contact

They grieve the loss of phone calls

They grieve the loss of sharing life here on earth together

One grieved the loss of being present with the family at the funeral because life circumstances prevented that

And yet

they rejoice at no more suffering

they rejoice at the opportunity to trust God and His Word

they rejoice in experiencing the truth and stability that God and His Word bring to them

they rejoice at the opportunity to tell others about Aunt Del’s vibrant relationship with her Savior

they rejoice at a reunion with a beloved husband

they rejoice at a reunion with beloved parents

they rejoice at the hope of eternity and a future reunion of their own

They testify to God’s grace and strength even in the valley of the shadow of death.

They have given me hope in my journey of parenting –
that children trained in the way they should go
will not depart from it when they grow older.

They have lived out 1 Thessalonians 4:13 and Matthew 7:24-25
and it has been my privilege to watch them.

Thank you Mom, Aunt Dee, and Aunt Enis.

And thank you, Aunt Del, for your beautiful life and legacy. I’m glad I will see you again.

Aunt Del

We said goodbye to Aunt Del

after 95 years

She said Hello to Jesus

and had the best

Resurrection celebration ever!

Because HIS Words are better than mine…
54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 New Living Translation
